A CEO’s Call to Action: Bring Computer Science and AI to Every Classroom

In a powerful call to reshape education, over 250 CEOs, including leaders from tech giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple (GAMMA), have signed an open letter urging U.S. schools to make computer science (CS) and artificial intelligence (AI) education mandatory for all K–12 students.
Published as a full-page ad in The New York Times, the letter is part of the UnlockED campaign, spearheaded by nonprofit leaders Code.org and CSforALL. The message is clear: in a world increasingly driven by technology, digital literacy is not optional — it’s essential.
Why This Matters
A University of Maryland study found that students exposed to computer science in high school earn 8% more in early careers compared to those who are not. Despite this, a 2024 Code.org survey revealed that less than 7% of U.S. high school students are enrolled in CS courses.
This educational gap is especially troubling when we consider how AI, automation, and digital tools are transforming every industry. By introducing CS and AI early, schools can equip students with skills that directly impact economic opportunity and workforce readiness.
The Case for Mandatory Curriculum
Legislators and education advocates have long pushed for broader CS access, with states like Washington leading the way. But the involvement of GAMMA companies signals a new level of urgency and influence.
These tech leaders aren’t just calling for awareness — they’re pushing for action:
Curriculum development for CS and AI
Professional development for teachers
Equitable access to high-quality tech education
This movement is not about turning every child into a programmer. It’s about ensuring all students — regardless of background — understand the technology shaping their lives and futures.
